| A life dedicated to cars Exhibition from 29 June to 29 Augustus 2004
Foreword The exhibition, dedicated to the work of the Italian engineer Giotto Bizzarrini, highlights one of the most beautiful adventures in motorcar history : that of the Grand Turismo in the XXst Century. This exceptional human adventure had to be presented to the public. Autoworld hopes that this exhibition - the most complete ever dedicated to the engineer Bizzarrini – will allow the visitor to discover an emotional adventure with the car as its main character. The exhibition reconstructs Bizzarrini’s professional track, starting with his creations for Ferrari, then an important part dedicated to Iso Rivolta and finally his own realizations and a complete historical overview of the Lamborghini brand. In short, this is an important exhibition that will be presented by means of many exceptional models in Autoworld from 29 June 2004 till the end of August 2004. Claude Lemmens A short history... Giotto Bizzarini: The genius behind Ferrari, Lamborghini, Iso Rivolta during the roaring sixties «I designed all those cars because I had seen them in my dreams
» The engineer Giotto Bizzarini was born in 1926, in Quercianella, not far from Livorno (Italy), and has worked his entire life as an engineer in the area of exceptional motorcars. At Ferrari he left behind his signature on the sublime Ferrari 250 Spider California and he designed the mythical GTO, even if that car was only build (in February 1962) after his departure. He also cooperated on the Formula 1 A.T.S. project with, amongst others, American world champion Phil Hill. The failure was harrowing. After that he worked together with Iso Rivolta – Renzo Rivolta’s company that became famous thanks to the Isetta – on the Iso Rivolta GT project with a Chevrolet V8 engine. In the autumn of 1963 Nuccio Bertone wanted to design a prestigious coupé that would couple luxury to exceptional performances. His choice fell on the chassis of the Iso Rivolta Coupé. Bizzarrini who had contributed to the project, saw a lot of possibilities and it was a small step to urge Nuccio Bertone to build a competition version. That is why you could witness the twin birth of the “Grifo” at the Turin motorfair in 1963. We speak of a twin birth since this car arose at the same time under the form of a Grifo A3/L (l = Lusso), displayed on Bertone’s stand, and a Berlinette which had also been designed by Bertone, but where the luxury had been removed this time to benefit the performances: the Grifo A3/C (c = Competizione). The coupé of Bertone remained an unique piece, but "Prototipi Bizzarrini" did not wait and overtook the Grifo "Stradale" with a second version, the "Competizione", that was effectively used in competition. In the meantime, "Prototipi Bizzarrini" developed his office in Livorno where, besides the drawing boards, he also installed a workshop. With the collaboration of car manufacturer Modena (the "Sport Cars" Company), the Grifo Berlinettes were from then on built as a limited edition. Some months later the new Grifo "Stradale" was officially presented at the Geneva Fair. He also founded the Livorno Autostar Company (1962) and built a 12 cylinder engine which he handed over to Lamborghini. Afterwards he built some spiders with a Chevrolet V8 engine. While he was thinking about a lighter and simpler model, he still built some Stradales in 1964 and 65. The small Bizzarrini which was developed in 1965, had been initially designed with the mechanics of a fiat 1500 but were replaced with those of the Opel 1.9 GT. This became GT 1900 Europe (1966). He ended his adventure in 1969, and left all matters to his partner Salvatore Diomante. In 1970, American Motors called upon him for the AMX project, but they didn’t get further then the production of three prototypes. More recently his legendary enthusiasm made him work on several projects, including some with his son Giuseppe. The exhibition Dates: from 29 June 2004 till 29 Augustus 2004 The exhibition will consist of: The complete history of Lamborghini, ranging from the first 350 GT, the mythical Miura and finally his last realizations such as the Murcielago and the Gallardo. Many Ferrari 250's, including the legendary "GTO" Iso Rivoltas and also the models which Bizzarrini designed himself. In short, no less than 32 prestigious cars which all car enthusiasts can discover in Autoworld. The project The exhibition will take place on the Mezzanine of the museum, covering a surface of approximately 2,000 m² which will be completely refurbished. The poster of the exhibition will be devised by studio Graton, author of the famous "Michel Vaillant". This will be an homage to the life of Giotto Bizzarini, a life dedicated entirely to cars. The poster will be distributed by the publicity network EURYBIA which supports this project, and in the distribution points of the sponsors.
