Dear visitors,
on Wednesday, April 24 the museum will exceptionally be closed for public.
We apologize for the inconvenience.

Following 36 years of presidency Herman De Croo is handing over his seat to Guy Verhofstadt

It is eight o’clock in the evening when, following the General Meeting and the Board of Directors, Herman De Croo symbolically passes the torch of the Autoworld-Brussels museum’s presidency to Guy Verhofstadt

If Autoworld exists it is to this influential statesman that we owe it. Inveterate Belgian, handling, among others, our two national languages with perfect ease and always with great humour, Herman De Croo is the cornerstone upon which the museum has rested since its creation.

In September 1986, at the time Minister of Communications, Herman De Croo, together with Minister Louis Olivier, in charge of Public Works, and especially, Prince Albert, who since became King Albert II, inaugurate one of the magnificent Palais du Cinquantenaire under the name of Palais Mondial de l’Automobile (Autoworld).

For numerous years Herman De Croo was Minister of State, President of the Chamber of Representatives, Professor, Mayor of Brakel...  Very close to the Belgian royal family, he has always defended the Belgian royalty with fervour.
As President-Founder of Autoworld-Brussels, he has, throughout his long mandate and notwithstanding his numerous other activities, always been extremely present and attentive to the museum’s evolution. He spoke at almost every event, both large and small, organised by the museum, constantly activating whatever could put Autoworld in the spotlight and ensure its sustainability

Of Autoworld, he always likes to say “here we treasure the past and embrace the future.”

The entire Autoworld team is extremely grateful for its President’s immense contribution to the museum during his 36 years of presidency. In gratitude, the museum’s mezzanine is renamed the "Herman De Croo Plaza".

Since this 12th May 2022 there is as such a new President who will oversee the destiny of Autoworld.
Unanimously acclaimed by the Board of Directors, Guy Verhofstadt, with enthusiasm accepted to take on the challenge with a view to not only continue the development of Autoworld and secure its future, but also to infuse it with his personality and creativity.  As such he becomes Autoworld’s second President.

Former Prime Minister, Minister of State and current European Parliamentarian, Guy Verhofstadt has always been passionate about cars in general and classic and vintage cars in particular. Amateur driver, he regularly competes in rallies and other automotive competitions. Fluent in Dutch, French and English he has now added the language of Dante for his love of Italy, and more especially Tuscany.  As a consequence, might he have a soft spot for beautiful Italian cars?   This in any case is what he intimated in his speech in December 2015, at the inauguration of the “Italian Car Passion” exhibition.

The entire Autoworld team enthusiastically welcomes its new President in whom it places high hopes.
