The 540 K represents the pinnacle of pre-war Mercedes-Benz engineering. Introduced in 1936 as the successor to the 500 K, it combined extraordinary power with unmatched elegance, thanks to its supercharged engine, and was reserved exclusively for the “rich and famous.” A total of 406 chassis were produced, each fitted with bespoke bodywork. Among these, only 32 of these hand-built cabriolets with Sindelfingen coachwork, were completed between 1936 and 1939. This particular example was originally delivered to Alfred Krupp. After the war, it became the property of the Dutch Prince Bernhard, a renowned automotive connoisseur, and was relocated to Sweden in 1953. Around 1990, Daimler-Benz meticulously restored the car to its original specification. The current owner has cherished this remarkable automobile since 1995.
