For many, this is the first true supercar. Originally, it was a pure racing car – type name SLR – of which only 10 were built in 1952. Between 1955 and 1957, 1,400 Gullwings were produced; it was the first production car with fuel injection. A key feature was its extremely rigid construction, thanks to a tubular chassis. What captures the imagination most are the gullwing doors, which inspired many nicknames. Twenty-nine examples with aluminum bodywork were also built, resulting in a weight saving of 158 kg. The 300 SL has long been a benchmark in classic car valuation, somewhat like the gold standard.
